AP art students work on end of year projects

Each year in May, AP students are required to take their end-of-the- year exams in order to receive college credit for the course. While most AP classes have some form of test to prove their knowledge, one AP course offered at FC focuses on pure talent. Rather than looking at a score on a test, AP art students are graded on their artistic ability alone.

For the few students currently enrolled in this course, 24 unique art pieces were required for submission. These submissions, which take place all throughout the school year, replace the usual testing method for an AP course.

“We had to submit 12 artworks to show variety, and 12 ‘piece’ series. They all had to show that our skill is worthy of college credit, but it was basically whatever we wanted. For the most part, the class is an independent study course,” said junior Julia Bays.

For students wanting an outlet for their artistic ability, AP art courses also help refine and channel their talent.

“Compared to other art classes I’ve taken at FC, this class is far less limiting while being twice as challenging,” said senior Brett Yeaton.

Though the grading method differs from every other AP course, it is the most efficient and successful way of determining the students comprehension of various techniques and skills.

“We pretty much have complete freedom in that class as long as we meet the deadlines. AP art is different because you don’t get any projects assigned or a certain medium you have to use. I love it because it really lets me explore my creative abilities and make something meaningful to me,” said senior Olivia Bays.
